CAL's 2 pre-season scrimmages offered a glimpse of what 2010 might have to offer -- exciting offense, hard-working defense, and lots of fun in between. Facing off against Seneca on Aug. 5th, CAL's loyal fans saw goals netted by JD Hawkins (3), Tanner Wilcox (2), John Arza, and Brett Bennett. Three of Seneca's goals came in the final minutes of the game, when Coach Lucas was experimenting with a variety of players from off the bench in a variety of new positions. "That's what scrimmages are for, after all," explained Coach Lucas. "We were kicking the tires," he added with a grin.
The tires seem to have carried the team well. CAL finished with a 7-4 win and a successful opener for 2010. By night's end, every single CAL player on the squad had seen action on the pitch. (Click "Read More" to see the rest of this article.) |

The 36 players trying out for the 2010 Christian Academy fall soccer season got a "run for their money" on July 15th. For the second year in a row, tryouts opened not with a traditional two-mile run, but rather, with the Yo-Yo Intermittant Recovery Run -- otherwise known affectionately by players as the "beep test." Additional beep tests were conducted on July 30th and Aug. 16, to chart fitness progress throughout the pre-season. (Click 'Read More' to learn more and see players standings -- updated 8/16/2010.) |

"If you can't run, you can't play." The manager of one of my old adult teams used to say that phrase a lot. He was right. Soccer is a game that requires incredible physical stamina. Most mid-field players (worth their salt) run a combined total of some 8 miles during a normal full-length game. To make matters worse, there's a lot of sprinting, a ton of cutting, and lots of agility required too. For this reason (and others), we stage morning conditioning workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 6:30am - 7:30am. (Click "Read More" for the rest of this article) |
