In the Tuesday, Sept. 23rd issue of the Courier-Journal, Louisville's largest newspaper, sports-writer Jason Frakes managed to land a front-page headline for his story on CAL's battle with Male in the opener to the Male Bulldog Cup Tournament. The story appeared online at this link. Jason opened with these words: "Take note, Louisville high school boys' soccer fans: Christian Academy is for real.
"Just ask Male.
He continued, "The Centurions got an early goal from freshman J.D. Hawkins and made it hold up behind a bend-but-don't-break defense to beat host Male 1-0 yesterday in a quarterfinal of the Bulldog Cup. Ranked No.18 in Kentucky, CAL (9-2) is enjoying its finest season under fourth-year coach Doug Lucas — although others haven't seemed to get the message. For whatever its worth, as of Sept. 23rd, CAL Men's soccer has just been bumped up from 20th to 18th to 16th in state soccer rankings. Keep in mind, these are subjective opinions by coaches scattered all over the state. They look mostly at the games we've played, the teams we've beaten, and their 'take' on how the games played out. But either way, this is the highest CAL Men's Soccer has ever been ranked in the history of the school. Even more importantly, it probably does represent positive forward momentum for our program, our progress, and our pursuit of excellence. So let's build on this foundation to work even harder than ever before. And thanks, statewide, to the coaches who believe in CAL Soccer! To see the poll for yourself, just go here. |

For the first time in history, CAL has finished undefeated in its district, winning top seed and first place in its season-long district play by beating every other team. Tonight's hard-fought 4-2 win over Eastern 'sealed the deal.' Scoring opened early when JD Hawkins scooted through the penalty box at top speed. An Eastern defender decided JD couldn't be allowed to run rampant through Eastern's ranks. The ref didn't like it and awarded a PK to CAL. It was just 24' into the game. Tanner Wilcox placed it way wide of Eastern's Keeper, Chris D'Anelo, almost hitting side netting with his brilliant PK, taking the score to 1-0. (Click "Read more" for the rest of this article.) |
