On Aug. 25th, CAL's Men's varsity soccer tackled long-time soccer dynasty, Ballard High School. Having earned something like nine state championships, we knew Ballard wasn't about to give up a fight easily. Our suspicions proved true as they moved the ball well, (much better than last year) defended without rest, and constantly put our keeper to the test. An early goal by Connor English helped boost our confidence though. J.D. Hawkins slipped a pass through to Connor, who holds several school sprint records. He outpaced everyone, even though it was his first start back from a strained hip flexor. [Click "Read More!" to read the rest of this article]

His tap was placed perfectly through the keeper's open legs. Oops. They came back near the end of the first half, however, to even the score -- and raise the suspense. CAL fans had to wait until 17 minutes-remaining before Tanner Wilcox made the go-ahead goal from 30 yards out, catching the Ballard keeper totally off-guard. "It's true we've worked on shots from outside in practice," Coach Lucas commented. "But I'll have to say -- Tanner's shot was the culmination of years of practice, not weeks." Fellow mid-fielder, A.J. Benge had tapped the ball to Tanner prior to the release. When the ball arrived in goal, it hit the back net of the goal at least halfway up. Needless to say, we probably need to check the stitching on that ball. The team worked well together and CAL got the victory against its first district opponent of the season.
