For our Aug. 20th game against Shelby County (ranked 14th in the state pre-season coaches' poll), we anticipated a completely different style game -- and we were right. Whereas Tuesday's opponents seemed bone-crunching, Thursday's counterattacks from Shelby County were skillful, quick, and well-planned. CAL went up 1-0 just 10 minutes into the game off a brilliantly placed cross from Hunter Yadon. In spite of a head injury sustained at John Hardin, Tanner Wilcox jumped at the chance to get a head on it (literally). He sent it directly to the goal line stripe, making it just about impossible to save. 1-0 CAL. [Click "Read More" to see the rest of this article.]
Somehow, we managed to hold onto the lead until 8 minutes into the second half, when Shelby's pressure finally resulted in a goal. Five minutes later, they netted another one. However, it seemed as if CAL's fitness level was one notch higher -- or at least CAL's will was stronger. with only 11 minutes to go, J.D. Hawkins challenged the keeper for a 50-50 ball that many players would have left alone (due to the rule about keeper). In this case, however, the ref seemed to conclude that having a finger on the ball doesn't constitute possession... because J.D. pretty much just kicked the ball out of the Keeper's grasp, thereby enjoying a no-call from the ref. Once he got the ball free, J.D. immediately shot on goal, finishing a big 2-2 tie against the team that knocked us out of regionals last season. |
